Class of '54 Troubadour FOUND!

This poor 'Ol Troubadour had been badly abused. Thankfully Shirley (Strassner) Wilkins rescued it and dropped it off for my usage on the blog. Below are some pictures of what I was able to salvage and might be of interest and awaken the memories of the Class of '54.

First lets see if you remember your Class Will!

Next the Faculty that survived your year!

The TROUBADOUR CREDO

 The CLASS  OFFICERS OF '54

And next...The CHEERLEADERS at their finest!
I dare any of them to show up at the REUNION in their Cheerleader Outfits!

                              THE KINGS COURT BALL

I'm looking forward to meeting any of the King's Court at the REUNION!
Coach John Schnell and his Family will be there! How about the KING and QUEEN...?
Do they still REIGN?

YOUR CLASS SPONSORS

It looks like whoever wrote this page might have had one too many at the
 King's Court Ball!
And what is that Goal Thing suppose to resemble? Anybody remember?

I will try to salvage more from this poor TROUBADOUR and post them if they can be scanned.

TROUBADOUR 1942

Thanks to the relentless pursuit of BHS historical information, Jean (Miller) Webb & Elaine (Combs) Noble ferreted this copy out of the archives of the Ferguson/Berkeley School District Library. The graciously copied the 1942 copy of the TROUBADOUR and I will scan the highlights for all to enjoy what was happening at BHS in 1942. The tone of this yearbook was definitely slanted to patriotism and support for our warriors who were gearing up to the long fight ahead in the Pacific and later in Europe. This yearbook was published just 5 months after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Those of us who remember those days have memories of the rationing of  gas, shoes, sugar, whiskey to name a few. And the American spirit was in full bloom in support of the war effort. People were working around the clock building war plants (Like our Small Arms Plant on Goodfellow Avenue),  Curtis Wright, Wagner, Emerson and many other small contractors making parts for the war effort. Some from this class were drafted or enlisted and sadly some died in WW II.  Below is the cover of this 1942 TROUBADOUR, the LAST publication until it resumed in 1947!

We are fortunate to have one of the 1942 Classmates attending our reunion , Imogene (Behle) Freeman. Hopefully some more might be able to join us!

DEMOCRACY:  According to Merriam-Webster, the definition of this word is government by the people in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through a system of representation usually involving periodically held  free elections.  My how times have changed as now it is possible for the dead, felons, illegals and even animals to cast their ballot at the Polls. In Chicago, you can even vote numerous times.  Our Representatives don't need us anymore either! Maybe it's time for a Change...Big Time!

When these classmate were at BHS they really possessed a spirit of patriotism and what our founding fathers believed in. This was our first taste of a World War and it was a frightening time to see loved ones going off to war and memorials being erected in each town or village for those serving and dying.

You will notice BHS had a very limited Faculty but they were some of the best! We had the three R's drummed in our sculls at the Elementary School. These teachers were all business. We were taught Cursive Writing which has become a lost art today and even knew how to hold a pencil!

Class of 1942 Prediction 7 Years Forward!
I'd like all to see how well this Basketball Team did without having any practice facilities. About 1947 building materials became available again and construction began for a Gymnasium and additional classrooms. This Basketball team had a mud practice field and only two basketballs. They did quite well considering  they didn't have a chance to practice. Their practice was at the game. I suspect their size helped because there were some "Big Boys" on this team like Bill Bangert who was a Champion Discus thrower and later competed in tossing the Taber! (That's a pole that looks like a telephone pole they toss in Scotland)

These Folks deserve a lot of credit for the development of our Schools. They were instrumental in the establishment of our School District.
